Hit-And-run In Koreatown Kills Cyclist

While we all know that there are risks when it comes to riding a bicycle, nobody should have to worry about getting struck by a driver who then flees the scene. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened to a bicyclist in Koreatown in late February.
On February 20 at around 3:30 a.m., a man in his 30s was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a car. He was thrown 30 feet away from the crash. The bicyclist was then struck by a second car. The driver of the first vehicle fled the scene, but the driver of the second vehicle stayed and waited for the police. Unfortunately, the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the Compass Law Group, we know that these crashes are far too common. If you need a Los Angeles catastrophic accident attorney, you can count on us to be by your side, working to ensure you or your loved one get the compensation they deserve.

Are Hit-And-Runs Common?

Vehicle accidents are a reality that everyone goes through at some point in their lives. Unfortunately, some have the added frustration of being victims in hit-and-run crashes, like the incident above shows us.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, for the latest reporting year there were:

  • 337 fatal hit-and-run collisions
  • 25,995 hit-and-run collision injuries

Those are astounding numbers and show that there are many drivers in this state who just do not care that their negligence causes other people harm. Many times, a hit-and-run suspect is not even caught.
When it comes to bicycle collision injuries, there were nearly 12,000 of them for the latest year of data. Almost all bicycle crashes, along with pedestrian crashes, result in some kind of injury. When a person is struck by a vehicle, their bodies cannot hold up to the force of thousands of pounds slamming into them regardless of the speed.

  • Even slow-speed bicycle and pedestrian crashes can result in catastrophic injuries.

It is vital that you understand that these injuries can bring tremendous costs to you and your family. Not only will there be medical bills, but also lost income if the victim cannot work, possible home and vehicle accommodations, as well as unknown pain and suffering damages.
Insurance companies are not considering all of this. They are looking to make a quick settlement. Unfortunately, they rarely offer crash victims enough to cover all of those expenses.
